FSFE on mukana lukuisissa paikallisissa projekteissa ympäri Eurooppaa sekä myös koko EU:ta koskevissa asioissa. FSFE on EU:n tunnistama asiantuntijataho, joka on ollut mukana esim. ohjelmistopatentteihin, monopolioikeudenkäynteihin ja tietoyhteiskunnan edistämistoimenpiteisiin liittyvissä asioissa. FSFE on osallistunut myös kaikkia länsimaita maailmaa koskeviin asioihin, kuten WIPO:oon ja ACTA:aan.<br /> <br /> FSFE on itsenäinen järjestö mutta se tekee toki tiivistä yhteistyötä Pohjois-Amerikan [[Free Software Foundation]]in kanssa. Sisarjärjestöjä on myös<br /> Etelä-Amerikassa ja Intiassa.<br /> <br /> FSFE:llä on virallinen Suomen paikallisryhmä (local team). Paikallisryhmän tehtävänä on edustaa FSFE:tä Suomessa sekä edistää suomalaisten ja kansainvälisten vapaiden ohjelmistojen toimijoiden tiedonvaihtoa ja yhteistyötä.
